Tacoma Rescue Mission Offers Educational Opportunities

Ronald Newman of Puyallup, Washington, serves as the managing director of Milestone Investment Properties, a group of companies specializing in rental property design, building, and management. While Ronald “Ron” Newman oversees all aspects of Milestone, outside of work, he supports the Tacoma Rescue Mission.

The Tacoma Rescue Mission goes beyond offering a hot meal and an overnight stay to the thousands of individuals in Tacoma, Washington, without a home or place to stay. Not only does the mission provide food, clean clothing, and a place to sleep, but it offers individuals the opportunity to improve their employment prospects by completing their education.

Almost two in five adults experiencing homelessness don't have a high school diploma. At the Tacoma Rescue Mission, adults over the age of 21 can earn high school credits to graduate from high school. They are also given support if they choose to study and test for the GED. Tutors are available to work with students one-on-one or in small groups.

World Vision’s Spark a Child’s Digital Future Program in Africa

Washington resident Ronald Newman serves as a managing member of the Milestone Companies, a real estate development and management company. Dedicated to serving his community, Ronald “Ron” Newman of Milestone supports several local and international organizations such as World Vision.

Although many individuals in the United States and other developed countries take technology for granted, World Vision has been using technology to promote its mission of helping communities tackle injustice and poverty. One of the organization’s many efforts is the Spark a Child’s Digital Future program.

In partnership with local government and corporate organizations, World Vision is establishing low-cost computer labs in rural Africa. These labs feature secure Internet and power connections, digital education materials that are relevant to the local communities, and extra-durable computers.

By building these labs, the organization hopes to expand children’s understanding of technology. This will give them the opportunity to develop essential skills for the future while also helping them learn and connect with the world. Children are not the only ones who benefit from these labs. Community members and teachers also have access to the technology after school is done for the day.

The 2013 Seattle Seahawks

For more than six years, Ronald Newman has led Puyallup company Milestone Investment Properties, LLC, as manager. Milestone's Ronald Newman is an avid fan of Washington sports and a follower of the Seattle Seahawks.

The 2013 Seattle Seahawks earned the franchise its Super Bowl championship. Like many championship teams of the past, the Seahawks experienced success as a result of world-class defense.

Over the course of the 2013 season, the Seattle defense allowed just 4,378 yards, or about 273 yards per game, the lowest total in the league. Seattle had the top-ranked pass coverage and a top-10 rush defense, a combination yielding a league-low 231 points allowed.

The league’s top-rated defense held seven opponents to 10 points or less during the regular season, highlighted by a 23-0 win over the New York Giants in Week 15. Seattle’s defense remained stable throughout the postseason, managing 23-15 and 23-17 victories over the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers, respectively.

The team’s defensive prowess was best demonstrated in the Super Bowl contest with the Denver Broncos. The Seahawks generated 43 points for the game while limiting the Broncos to just one touchdown.

The game saw the Seahawks take an insurmountable 36-0 lead deep into the third quarter before the defense finally relented. The Most Valuable Player award went to linebacker Malcolm Smith.

Improving Skiing Balance

Ronald Newman serves as a managing member at the Milestone Companies, a Washington-based group that completes real estate development projects in the area. When he’s not busy with work, Ronald “Ron” Newman enjoys taking advantage of Washington’s regular winter snow and is very fond of snow skiing.

Good balance is a key component to good skiing. A part of good balance comes from maintaining the correct skiing posture. Ideally, the feet should be spread apart at a comfortable distance with the knees and ankles slightly flexed. Further, the spine should be curved naturally and the hips and shoulders should be aligned. In addition to posture, skiers must consider how they place their weight. Ideally, weight should be placed on the feet equally without favoring either the ball or heel of the foot. This keeps the ski boot from getting overloaded at either the back or front ends. Additionally, putting more weight on the outside ski, while seemingly counterintuitive, helps skiers stay more balanced while turning.

If skiers find that getting the right balance is difficult, the problem might be their strength. For many individuals, trying a strength exercise at the same time as a balance exercise is much more challenging than strength alone, which often results in poor balance while skiing. Rather than ignoring it, skiers can do exercises that combine balance and strength. Squatting on a balance board is a great exercise for improving skiing balance. Combining both aspects had better results than strength training alone because it trains the body to stay balanced during varying movements. Most skiers will notice improvements in skiing balance within just one month.

Visiting Lake Chelan during the Different Seasons

Possessing over three decades of business and leadership experience, Ronald Newman serves as a managing member of the Milestone Companies, a Washington-based real estate development and management group. Outside of his work at Milestone, Ronald “Ron” Newman enjoys traveling to Lake Chelan every month.

Offering a unique mix of agriculture, shopping, and recreation, Lake Chelan is a popular vacation spot throughout the year. The area is typically busiest between June and August due to the large number of families. While visiting during this time is certainly crowded, the lake is full of kid-friendly activities and the surrounding greenery and fall are at their fullest. By September, the crowds start thinning out. Autumn is a great time for romantic vacations to Lake Chelan and most visitors during the months of September, October, and November take advantage of the slower pace to truly enjoy the area’s nature.

From December through February, Lake Chelan experiences its winter; however, this is the least crowded time to visit. Although these months are the coldest of the year, visitors can explore the area at their own pace, thanks to the nearly nonexistent crowds. There are plenty of winter activities to keep visitors busy, and the hiking and scenery is rarely affected by the winter weather. Spring is another great time to visit because of the blooming of local flora. The weather is a perfect blend between warm and cold so visitors can enjoy the colorful scenes while hiking or biking along the trails without getting too hot.

Keeping Your Team Motivated as a Coach

Ronald “Ron” Newman helps lead the Milestone Companies, a collection of corporations that he helped establish to develop and construct multi-family projects. An active member of his community in Washington, Ronald Newman spends some of his time outside of Milestone coaching little league football and basketball.

For many athletes, especially younger athletes, internal motivation is not enough, so it becomes your responsibility as the coach to keep your team motivated. This often starts with your own understanding of the game. Players, even young ones, can tell when their coach is unfamiliar with the sport, and it often decreases their belief that their team will succeed. If you do not know much about your team’s sport, make the effort to learn about it as you go and only teach the things that you do know. Doing this also makes it easier for you to show your team why their drills or practices are important. By understanding how their training will make them better, your team will be more motivated to continue working on themselves.

Motivation is not just about improving and winning, it is also about continuing past the losses. It is important that you discipline your team without being condescending. Athletes need a good mix of praise and discipline as they train. When you see a player doing something right, point it out and praise him or her. If a team member is doing something wrong, kindly tell the individual how to improve. When doing this, avoid making comparisons between athletes because it can kill motivation and create internal team hostility. Do not equate your team’s individual self-worth with their performance, either, as this can have a similar demotivating effect.

Pairing Wine and Food

Milestone Investment Properties manager Ronald Newman brings more than three decades of supervision experience to the Washington-based company. Knowledgeable in such areas as project management and risk analysis, he has overseen Milestone’s completion of several large projects. In his free time, Ronald “Ron” Newman enjoys cooking and finding good food and wine pairings.

Wine and food pairing goes far beyond the common understanding that a red wine goes with red meat and white wine with fish. The flavor and texture of both the wine and the food effect which pairings work and which ones do not. Ideally, similar flavors should be paired so that the taste of the wine complements the taste of the food rather than competes with it. If a meal is sweet, then the wine should have a higher level of sweetness. Similarly, if the meal is savory with a higher salt level, then an acidic wine works best. The weight of the food and wine must also complement one another. Heavy wines work best with heavy meals, while light wines are better for light meals.

These rules can be a bit of a challenge to follow when a meal is high in spice. While acidic and sweet foods can easily be paired with acidic and sweet wine flavors, this rule of matching does not always work with spicy foods. Pairing wine to spicy food depends on an individual’s ability to handle heat. A low tolerance for heat would be better suited for a sweet, non-acidic wine because it helps counteract the meal's overall spiciness.

Further, if a dish features a large amount of sauce, then the wine is best paired to the sauce rather than primary vegetables or meat used in the dish. However, the same rules still apply regardless of whether the wine is being matched to a meat, vegetable, or sauce: weights, textures, and flavors should be complimentary.

The Crush Festival at Lake Chelan

Classic French Wine and Food Pairings

Ronald Newman guides Milestone Investment Properties, LLC, and leads a Puyallup, Washington, enterprise that has developed a number of quality residential communities. He and the Milestone team have planned and constructed properties such as Wynstone Townhomes, and have them under management. Ronald Newman enjoys travel in his free time and frequently visits Lake Chelan in Washington’s wine country. A culinary enthusiast, he particularly enjoys pairing wine and food.

Many classic pairings center around French food, and duck à l’orange with a Riesling is no exception. The bittersweet sauce of the duck is intensified and expanded in combination with a Riesling, which is just off-dry in character. Full-bodied red wines such as Cabernets traditionally pair well with dishes that feature red meat. The pepper notes in a Cabernet match a quality steak rubbed in black pepper, and accentuate the wine’s fruitiness.

For those who want to experience a distinct lift in their wine pairings, caviar can be paired with champagne. Champagne does not simply complement this appetizer; the bubbles alter the texture, as well as taste, of the caviar in the mouth to something similar to a pâté.

Documentary Series Chronicles the Roosevelts’ Lives

Ronald Newman is an veteran Washington real estate executive who guides Milestone Investment Properties, LLC. Under his leadership, Milestone has undertaken numerous high-profile residential developments, including Orchard Grove and Marastone Village. Ronald Newman considers the Bible his favorite book and enjoys watching documentary and history programs in his free time.

One of the most well-received documentary series in recent years was “The Roosevelts: An Intimate History,” by acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns. Spanning 14 episodes, this epic series recounts the lives of Presidents Theodore and Franklin, as well as First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. It begins with the birth of Theodore, a definer of America’s early 20th century.

The series portrays his time in office vividly, while interweaving the story of young Franklin, who would famously overcome polio to become president at the outset of the Great Depression. The narrative presents a human dimension to these oversized figures, faults and all, and shows their deep connection with the people they led, through often-challenging circumstances.

Best Wines to Pair with Kale and Sausage

Ronald Newman founded Milestone Investment Properties, LLC, in July 2010. Based in Puyallup, Washington, the company provides services in the acquisition and design of multifamily properties, as well as overseeing the development of construction through its management division. Ron Newman handles the overall aspects of the company through operational management.

Ronald Newman’s interests out of the workplace include cooking, and he enjoys pairing foods with the right wines. Below are three suggestions for pairing with kale and sausage, a simple, rustic dish that incorporates white onion, garlic, white beans, and sun-dried tomatoes.

Michael Austin, the writer of the Chicago Tribune’s wine column, “The Pour Man,” suggests pairing the dish with either of the following three French red wines. The pairings were chosen by Ryan Arnold, a sommelier and the divisional wine director for Lettuce Entertain You restaurants.

1. The 2014 Albert Boxler Grand Cru Sommerberg Riesling, from Alsace, tempers the mild heat and slight spice of the sausage.

2. The 2014 Laurent Tribut Chablis, from Burgundy, matches the weight of the beans in the dish, but also pairs perfectly with the greens.

3. The 2013 Domaine Berthet-Bondet Trio Cotes du Jura, from Jura, has high acidity and low tannins, which make it an ideal complement to the taste of the sausage.
